Later on in May the Copyright Office will be holding its three-yearly rule making hearings and, as we already know, one of the subjects up for discussion is whether to keep jailbreaking legal or not. Along with many others, Jay Freeman, aka Saurik the man behind Cydia, will be present to put forward his fight on our behalf. You too can help by signing this petition [ext link] that has been drawn up by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

The EFF say that there are millions of people making use of jailbreaking across the world so that they can run the software they want on a device that they own, rather than allowing Apple to dictate what they can and can’t do. It doesn’t matter whether you want to get rid of bloatware , make sure you have the most up to date security or simply just use your iPhone or iPad the way you want it to, jailbreaking is the only way to truly interact with your device.
There is a chance that, although they have voted in favor of allowing jailbreaking in the past, they could go the opposite this time and vote to make it illegal. That will cast the entire future of jailbreaking under a huge shadow and the only way you can help to make it right is to add your name to the petition. You will need to give a valid email address, your full name and your zip code, that’s all. So far, more than 22000 people have signed it but the more signatures there are, the harder it is going to be for the Library of Congress and the Copyright Office to make it a crime to jailbreak.

While they have been successful previously, there is no guarantee that the same will be true of this year. The meeting takes place on May 21 and Jay Freeman will be a proponent, along with Mitch Stoltz from the EFF, Catherine Gellis from Digital Age Defense and Kyle Wiens from iFixit. You can be there in spirit and show your support by adding your name to that petition and doing your bit to preserve your rights as an iPhone or iPad owner.
